The vision of the Wallace Arts Trust is to support, promote and expose New Zealand contemporary artists while providing the wider public with an inimitable cultural and historical resource of contemporary New Zealand art.
These objectives are achieved first and foremost by the acquisition of new artworks by contemporary New Zealand artists, as well as the annual Wallace Art Awards. The Awards are the oldest of their kind in New Zealand and are now in their twenty first year, awarding four overseas residencies and various prizes amounting to over $190,000.
A major new achievement has been the opening of the The Pah Homestead, TSB Bank Wallace Arts Centre, which has recently celebrated its 2nd Year Anniversary. The Collection is available to the public through a changing programme of exhibitions, and also hosts touring regional exhibitions. The Arts Centre also houses an artist-in-residency programme, and is currently developing an education programme aimed at primary and secondary schools.
As well as running the arts centre, the Wallace Arts Trust loans out artworks to some 30 institutions ranging from schools to universities and hospitals, to expose as wide a range of audience to contemporary New Zealand art as possible.
The Trust also fulfils its objectives through the provision of a free online search database of the Collection now numbering over 6,000 artworks including paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, AV works and various other multimedia works.
A large portion of the Collection is housed at Rannoch, including over one hundred sculptures from leading New Zealand artists. Rannoch can be visited on application.
Beyond this the Trust financially supports many other arts organizations in New Zealand. Sir James Wallace is patron, trustee or board member of some 20 such institutions.
