2005 Wallace Arts Awards
Sara Hughes
Paramount Award
Sara Hughes was the winner of the Paramount Award for her work "Download". Sara recieves $35,000 for a six-month residency in New York with the International Studio and Curatorial Program with included airfares, and a bronze trophy by leading New Zealand sculptor Terry Stringer.
Sara Hughes is an artist whose paintings and installations have an acute sense of ‘how painting interacts with the space in which it is located.’(1) Hughes’ painting is meticulous and controlled. Her work is largely abstract in which she directs clean lines, shapes and patterns of independent colours to create a sense of movement, illusion, and three dimensional depth. Hughes’ work explores the digital realm and the world of technology and computing. ‘Entering the territory of op art and even pop art, she creates work that is at once ethereal and sensual, transparent and dense, serious and light-hearted. She can be seen to belong to a category of artists’ critic William McAloon has described as the "blurry abstractionists".’(2)
"Her practice is described as painting but it is a long way removed from traditional paintbrush and easel. Through her use of new imagery and site-specific locations she seeks to show that painting has entered a new era with the digital age. As a contemporary artist, she sees it as her task to address what painting now is and how it can operate." (3)
